Holon Launches Pilot Program Using Water Sprinklers to Cool Bus Stops Amid Heatwave

The city of Holon has initiated Israel's first pilot project to cool bus stops using a water-based sprinkler system. The pilot, named "7-7-7," operates at a single bus stop in front of Holon Mall for seven days, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Holon Mayor Shay Kinan explained that this innovative cooling system is being tested to assess its effectiveness in reducing heat discomfort for passengers during the hot summer hours. The municipality will evaluate the results before deciding whether to expand the system to additional bus stops.

The system works by spraying water to cool the waiting area, providing relief from the intense Israeli heat. However, some residents have expressed concerns about the inconvenience of waiting in wet conditions. They suggest that instead of just cooling the air around the stops, the city should consider building enclosed, air-conditioned bus shelters similar to those in South Korea, which protect passengers from weather elements without causing discomfort.

Mayor Kinan acknowledged the initiative as a positive step toward improving summer waiting conditions but noted that future solutions might include more comprehensive shelter designs. The pilot reflects Holon's efforts to address the challenges of the Israeli summer heat and improve public transportation comfort.
