Israeli Authorities Relocate Hyena Female From West Bank Settlement to Jordan Valley Reserve
In recent months, a hyena known as Yossi, frequently seen roaming the West Bank settlements of Shaarei Tikva and Elkana, became an internet sensation. However, it was later discovered that Yossi is actually a female hyena about one year old. After several hyenas were captured in the area, one pregnant female was relocated to the Strava Nature Reserve in the Jordan Valley to reduce concerns among local residents. This relocation effort follows the capture and transfer of two other female hyenas from the region.
The Israel Nature and Parks Authority, along with the Civil Administration, acknowledged that additional hyenas still roam near the settlements. They are continuing efforts to capture and relocate these animals to minimize human-wildlife conflicts. Despite fears among some residents, there have been no reports of hyenas attacking people. Locals like Meital Mizrahmi from Shaarei Tikva expressed mixed feelings, appreciating the proximity to nature but saddened by the removal of the animals.
Veterinarian Dr. Tomer Nesimian emphasized that relocation is a necessary measure when wildlife encounters with humans become dangerous, but it should be accompanied by education, fencing, and sanitation efforts. The relocated hyena was fitted with a tracking device to monitor her adaptation and movements, providing valuable data for future wildlife management decisions.
The Nature Authority stressed the importance of balancing wildlife conservation with residents’ safety and quality of life. The hyena is a protected species and a vital part of the local ecosystem, so all actions are conducted carefully and legally. The ongoing challenge is to maintain coexistence between expanding settlements and the natural environment surrounding them.
