US Talks with Senior Hamas Figure Give Netanyahu New Leverage Amid Gaza Tensions
The United States recently engaged in discussions with a senior Hamas official as part of efforts to advance a Gaza agreement. However, Israeli security officials view this development as providing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with new strategic maneuvering space rather than immediate progress toward a ceasefire or withdrawal. Netanyahu reportedly told a peace council delegation that Israel cannot realistically pursue Gaza withdrawals or accelerate agreements before upcoming elections, especially since Hamas has yet to fulfill its disarmament commitments.
Israeli defense sources highlight that Hamas is currently under significant pressure due to Israel's control of the "yellow line" inside Gaza, ongoing targeted assassinations, and internal unrest among Gaza residents who have lost homes and property. Despite this, Hamas has managed to restore over 80 percent of its governance institutions, including local authorities, police units, and most government ministries, maintaining control over Gaza's remaining streets. The population remains subdued, largely out of fear of Hamas itself, while Hamas leadership is also rattled by the effectiveness of Israeli targeted killings, which have disrupted senior and mid-level operatives alike.
Israel's tactical hold over the yellow line, primarily along the 70-90 ridge area, provides significant observational and firepower advantages deep into Gaza. Hamas recognizes the strategic importance of this position and the unlikelihood of Israel relinquishing it. However, Israeli officials criticize the political leadership for failing to capitalize on Hamas's current vulnerabilities or to advance a serious political agenda, instead reacting to external pressures, notably from the US, which is heavily involved in regional challenges such as the Hormuz Strait crisis.
In recent days, Israeli security forces have refrained from targeted assassinations out of respect for the visiting peace delegation, but these operations are expected to intensify once the delegation departs, aiming to further pressure Hamas. The ongoing dynamic reflects a complex interplay between US diplomatic efforts, Israeli military strategy, and Hamas's internal resilience amid escalating tensions in Gaza.
