Rising Antisemitism Shadows Israel’s Strong Ties with Greece and Cyprus

According to the Anti-Defamation League's Global 100 index, antisemitic attitudes are alarmingly prevalent in Greece and Cyprus, two key Israeli allies in Europe. The survey found that about 50% of the adult population in Greece holds antisemitic views at a "heightened level," while Cyprus has the highest rate in the European Union at 58%, compared to a 17% average in Western Europe. The index measures agreement with 11 antisemitic stereotypes, defining "heightened levels" as agreement with six or more.

Despite these troubling figures, Cyprus maintains a complex relationship with Israel. Only 38% of Cypriots express a positive opinion of Israel, while 57% view Palestine favorably. Nevertheless, 81% support maintaining diplomatic ties with Israel, and 90% want Israeli tourists to continue visiting the island. This contrast highlights that attitudes toward Israel as a state differ from prejudices against Jews as a people.
