Holon Replaces Infamous 'Tears Roundabout' With Safer Traffic Lights Amid Light Rail Work

The Kugel Roundabout in Holon, long nicknamed the "Tears Roundabout" due to its difficulty for driving test candidates, has been replaced by a traffic light-controlled intersection. This change is part of the Green Line light rail construction in the area. The roundabout was known as the largest multi-lane roundabout in Israel and a notorious challenge for learner drivers, often causing frustration and test failures because of its complex three-lane design and heavy traffic.

The roundabout's proximity to the Holon Licensing Office made it a regular part of the practical driving test route for residents of the Gush Dan area. Despite attempts over the years to improve traffic flow and safety, congestion worsened, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. Social media users expressed disappointment over the removal of the roundabout, with comments like "The Tears Roundabout is dead, long live the crying traffic lights."

Holon Mayor Shai Kinan addressed the change on Facebook, acknowledging the roundabout's reputation for frustration and confirming that the new traffic light junction is safer and more convenient. He noted that the Green Line light rail now crosses the former roundabout from north to south, necessitating the redesign. The transformation aims to improve daily traffic flow for thousands of vehicles passing through the area.
