Trump Hesitates to Back Israeli Candidate Ahead of October Elections

US President Donald Trump indicated on Monday that he might support a candidate in the upcoming Israeli elections but refrained from naming anyone. Speaking to FOX News, Trump said it would be most appropriate for him to stay out of the election process, though he added, "I might support someone." He emphasized, "It’s best that I do not get involved." This marks a shift from his stance two months ago when he said it was "very likely" he would back Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, citing their good relationship but urging Netanyahu to be more rational.

Trump has repeatedly highlighted his strong ties with Netanyahu but has so far avoided a public endorsement ahead of the October 27 elections. When asked last month if anyone in Israel was more suitable than Netanyahu, Trump replied that he did not know most candidates well enough to judge. Their relationship has seen ups and downs since Trump’s return to the White House, with Netanyahu visiting the White House seven times during Trump’s current term, more than any other leader, though their last meeting was brief and without joint statements.

Signs of waning trust include the Trump administration not informing Jerusalem about a civilian nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia or its plans regarding the Iran conflict. Additionally, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s remarks about the IDF remaining in the Lebanon security zone drew a US State Department response calling it "contrary to the agreement." Recent events in Kuseira also sparked angry reactions from the US Capitol, raising concerns about potential instability in Israel.
