MK Michal Waldiger Highlights Rabbi Kook's Legacy of Unity and Clear Conviction

MK Michal Waldiger of the Religious Zionism party spoke in an interview on the Jewish date of 3 Elul about the enduring relevance of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook's teachings. She emphasized that despite the passage of 91 years since his death, Rabbi Kook's philosophy remains vibrant, especially his vision of spreading Torah beyond study halls to the broader public.

Waldiger focused on the concept of unity, describing it not as a worn-out slogan but as a sacred principle that must be respected. She explained that true unity allows for sharp debate "until white smoke emerges in the room," while maintaining respect by focusing on the issues rather than personal attacks. This, she said, reflected Rabbi Kook's approach, who balanced firm clarity in disputes with unconditional love for every Jew.

She noted that Rabbi Kook was often misunderstood as solely a figure of tolerance, but in reality, he was decisive and clear in his positions, including on Sabbath observance. Waldiger praised his ability to combine firmness with love, calling it a rare quality to emulate.

Waldiger also observed a growing demand across Israeli society for Rabbi Kook's teachings today. She described his approach as a daily lifestyle that integrates deep faith with meticulous observance of commandments, both major and minor. She concluded that the public is striving not only to revive but to live out his teachings continuously as an ongoing spiritual endeavor.
