Emily Damari Recreates Meal From Gaza Captivity as Symbol of Triumph
Nearly three years after her release from captivity in Gaza, Emily Damari recreated a simple meal that one of her captors used to prepare for her under harsh conditions. Sharing a series of videos on Instagram, Damari documented the cooking process, emphasizing that this time she used the best quality ingredients available, calling it a "victory dish." She described the original meal as "a puree with a bit of cheese," which was occasionally supplemented by cheese delivered in aid trucks.
Damari explained that she had promised herself to remake the dish properly once home, with better cooking and ingredients. She enhanced the recipe by adding tuna and small pieces of chili, ingredients she did not have access to during captivity. She also noted that even simple items like spelt pita bread were unavailable to her while imprisoned.
After finishing the meal, Damari called her friend Romi Gonen, and they reminisced about the moment cheese arrived during captivity, a rare and almost unbelievable event amid severe food shortages. Damari also shared how basic utensils were lacking in captivity, making eating a challenge. The video series concluded with a screenshot of a conversation with Adam Berger, who suggested she recreate more recipes from her captivity, to which Damari responded that some dishes, like lentil soup, remain difficult memories.
