Sea Versus Pool Swimming: Health, Fitness, and Skin Benefits Compared
In sunny Israel, especially during August, people often have a clear preference between swimming in the sea or a pool. Sea lovers enjoy the waves, open space, and walking barefoot on sand, while pool enthusiasts prefer calm water, a controlled environment, and the ability to swim continuously in a set lane. Beyond personal preference, each option offers distinct advantages and challenges affecting physical activity, safety, and skin health.
Physiologically, swimming in a pool provides stable and predictable conditions without waves or currents, allowing swimmers to maintain a steady pace, track distance and time accurately, and perform symmetrical, continuous movements. This makes pools ideal for training technique, speed, and endurance in controlled settings. Conversely, sea swimming requires constant adaptation to changing waves, currents, and water temperature, engaging stabilizing muscles in the shoulders and core more intensely. Open water swimmers also perform "sighting" by lifting their heads to navigate, which can reduce hydrodynamic efficiency and increase perceived effort.
Walking on sand also challenges balance and stabilizing muscles more than walking on solid ground, while the natural environment may enhance relaxation and well-being. However, open water swimming carries greater uncertainties, such as currents, waves, visibility, weather, and boat traffic. Swimmers are advised to use designated beaches, avoid swimming alone, use safety buoys, and follow lifeguard instructions.
Regarding skin health, Dr. Barak Tzalkishvili, a dermatologist at Soroka Medical Center, highlights that pool water contains chlorine for disinfection, which can irritate skin if exposure is prolonged or chlorine levels are unbalanced. Copper added to chlorine can oxidize and discolor hair, especially blond hair. Pools may harbor bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, causing ear infections and skin issues, and public areas can spread viral warts or fungal infections. In the sea, irritants include jellyfish, corals, sea urchins, and certain algae, which can cause allergic reactions or skin irritation. Contrary to popular belief, urinating on jellyfish stings is not recommended; warm water immersion is advised instead.
Extended water exposure in both environments can damage the skin’s natural barrier, leading to dryness, itching, and peeling, which may increase infection risk. Sun protection is essential, with sunscreen reapplied every two hours and after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Any unusual skin symptoms should prompt consultation with a dermatologist.
