Majority of Israeli Jews Oppose Zim Shipping Sale Due to Qatari Stakeholders

A recent survey conducted by Meno Geva and commissioned by the Zim Shipping workers' committee reveals broad opposition among Israeli Jews to the proposed sale of Zim Shipping to buyers with Qatari shareholders. The survey, conducted in August 2026 among 499 Jewish respondents aged 18 and over, found that 67.1% oppose the deal, with opposition rising to 77.2% among religious Jews. Only 2.4% support the sale without reservations despite Qatari involvement.

Respondents were asked about the potential benefits of the deal, such as significant investment and enhanced global competitiveness, against concerns about Qatari stakeholders gaining influence in a company considered strategically vital to Israel. The results showed that 57.1% specifically oppose the deal due to Qatari involvement, while an additional 10% oppose it outright. Another 30.5% would support the sale only if it passes security checks.

Opposition was consistent across demographic groups, including secular (70.2%), ultra-Orthodox (66%), and traditional Jews (60.2%). Older age groups, particularly those aged 55-64 and 65+, showed the highest opposition rates at over 73%. Men opposed the deal at a rate of 70.2%, women at 64.2%, and opposition was higher among those with academic education (74%) compared to lower education levels.

Oren Caspi, chairman of the Zim workers' committee, emphasized the strategic importance of Zim Shipping, describing it as integral to Israel's maritime independence and supply chain security. He urged the government to halt the sale, stating, "This is not just a workers' struggle but a national interest fight. Nearly seven out of ten oppose the deal, and decision-makers must listen. We call on the Israeli government to keep Zim Israeli and protect the future of its employees and their families."
