Hapoel Galil Elyon Women’s Basketball Triumphs Amid War and Hardship in Northern Israel
Over the past three years, the Hapoel Galil Elyon women's basketball team has faced immense challenges due to ongoing conflict in northern Israel. Forced to relocate their training and living arrangements to Beit HaNadiv in the Jordan Valley during the height of hostilities, the team struggled with constant air raid sirens, postponed games, and uncertainty. Despite these hardships, they maintained their core local roster and commitment to the Galil community.
Coach Moshe Rahamim recounted how the team finished third and then second in previous seasons while displaced, finally returning to the Galil region this year amid continued war. The majority of the squad consists of seven homegrown players, which helped sustain the team as external players found the security situation difficult. The war deeply affected their routine, with many training sessions disrupted by alarms and some players unable to attend due to safety concerns.
Professionally, the team excelled, finishing first in the northern district regular season and qualifying for the playoffs to ascend to the National League (second tier). However, unlike teams in central Israel that continued playing normally, Galil Elyon faced a nearly two-and-a-half-month hiatus from official matches. They overcame logistical challenges, including repeated postponements and venue changes, culminating in two decisive playoff victories against Hapoel Lod and Elitzur Tel Aviv to secure promotion.
The final home game in Shamir was a community event, with the arena packed beyond capacity, underscoring the team's deep local support. Players like Dana Barko and Or Davidi, both from the region, were key contributors. Davidi described the promotion as a beacon of hope for the Galil community, emphasizing the difficulty of training amid frequent alarms and the psychological toll of living in a conflict zone. Dana Beitan highlighted the two-month training freeze before playoffs as a critical obstacle overcome through collective dedication.
This achievement symbolizes more than sports success; it represents resilience and unity for a community enduring ongoing conflict. The team’s insistence on representing their home region despite adversity has inspired both local residents and the broader sports community in northern Israel.
