Manachem Mendel Axelrod Appointed Chief Rabbi of Moldova at Age 36

A ceremonial event was held in Chișinău, Moldova, to mark the appointment of 36-year-old Rabbi Manachem Mendel Axelrod as the country's Chief Rabbi. The ceremony was attended by Israel's Chief Rabbi Kalman Bar, Israeli Ambassador Yoram Elron, senior European rabbis, Chabad leaders, and hundreds of local Jews led by Alexander Bilinkis, head of the Moldovan Jewish community. Rabbi Axelrod's appointment was formalized following elections among community leaders and received official recognition and blessings from Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who stated that his appointment brings joy not only to the Jewish community but to all citizens.

Rabbi Axelrod, originally from Atlit, Israel, moved to Moldova after the passing of his grandfather, Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, who was the first Chief Rabbi of Moldova after the Soviet Union's collapse. He is likely the youngest Chief Rabbi in Europe. During the event, he emphasized the safety of Jews in Moldova, noting that it is one of the safest countries for Jews in Europe and that Israeli visitors can move freely without fear, with authorities actively combating antisemitism.

Chief Rabbi Kalman Bar praised Rabbi Axelrod and highlighted the renewal of Jewish life in Moldova, saying, "We do not celebrate our victory with a parade of weapons but with an increase of light. Today, we light a great light here in Moldova, with Rabbi Axelrod who will continue to illuminate Jewish life. This is our true victory." Rabbi Axelrod concluded the event with a speech expressing his commitment to serve and support the community with dedication and responsibility.
