Israel Launches Compensation for Public Transport Subscribers Affected by 'Operation Roaring Lion'

Thousands of Israeli public transport users who purchased monthly unlimited passes but were unable to fully use them due to service reductions during Operation 'Roaring Lion' can now claim compensation. The scheme, developed by the Ministry of Transport, offers several compensation options based on the type of subscription and individual eligibility. During the operation, public transportation services were significantly curtailed nationwide alongside widespread shutdowns of the economy and education systems, leaving many pass holders paying for unused travel days.

The issue sparked public debate and was brought before the Knesset's Economic Committee in May, where the Ministry of Transport announced a compensation framework would be published within two weeks. Although implementation was delayed, the plan has now been activated. Compensation amounts and methods will depend on the number of days transport services were reduced and each passenger's eligibility. Options include discounts on future monthly passes, credit loading, or multi-day periodic passes.

This initiative ensures that prepaid funds for unused travel days are not lost but reimbursed through various compensation alternatives. The move follows months of public advocacy, notably by the organization Betzalmo, which petitioned the Ministry and the Economic Committee to address the issue. After months of waiting, affected passengers can now exercise their right to compensation for the disrupted service period during the military operation.
