Amar'e Stoudemire Reflects on Spiritual Journey and Israeli Career at Basketball Hall of Fame Induction

Amar'e Stoudemire was officially inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, as part of the Class of 2026. The ceremony honored eight new members, including players Candace Parker, Elena Delle Donne, Shammond Williams, coaches Doc Rivers, Mark Few, Mike D'Antoni, and referee Joey Crawford. Stoudemire’s speech stood out for Israeli basketball fans due to his personal and spiritual reflections tied to his time in Israel.

Stoudemire recounted his challenging childhood and direct leap from high school to the NBA, where he played 14 seasons, mainly with the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks. He revealed that for 20 years he studied Torah and biblical history privately, which influenced his decision to move to Israel after his final NBA season with Miami. "I wanted to find a place where I could both live and play," he said, describing his transition to Hapoel Jerusalem, where he adapted from luxury NBA life to smaller venues and bus travel.

In Jerusalem, Stoudemire won his first championship and later moved to Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he ended his playing career with another title and Finals MVP honors. He fondly recalled living in Tel Aviv by the Mediterranean and fulfilling his dream. He also shared how basketball was a therapeutic refuge during his turbulent youth, starting with the first ball his mother gave him.

Stoudemire highlighted his NBA career milestones, including being the ninth overall pick in 2002, his role in the Suns’ innovative "Seven Seconds or Less" offense under coach Mike D'Antoni, six All-Star appearances, and overcoming a serious knee microfracture surgery to return stronger. His overarching message was one of perseverance: "Stay out of trouble, stay positive, focused, and meaningful, and remember that persistence can help you overcome anything."

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony was broadcast on NBA TV and the NBA App, celebrating Stoudemire’s unique journey from hardship to NBA stardom and his impactful years in Israeli basketball.
