Iran Confirms Three Pilots Held Alive in Qatar After March SU24 Crash

The Iranian military announced on August 15 that three of its pilots are alive and being held captive in Qatar. These pilots survived the crash of their SU24 fighter jets during attack missions carried out in March. Alongside this announcement, Iranian officials criticized Qatar for preventing the detained pilots from contacting their families or Iranian authorities.

Reports from the Washington Post reveal Qatar's secret negotiations with Iran at the war's outset, including a proposal to shut down the Ras Laffan gas facility to disrupt global energy markets and pressure the US and Israel to halt hostilities. Qatar demanded full immunity and Iranian assurances against attacks on its oil and gas infrastructure. Although Qatar officially cited security concerns for shutting down the facility early in the conflict, satellite images showed no damage at that time, indicating a deliberate move.

Qatari officials denied these claims, calling them false and harmful to their relations with Washington and their mediator role. Qatar hosts the US Central Command airbase at Al Udeid and maintains ties with Hamas and shared gas interests with Tehran. Despite US and CIA awareness of Qatar's independent dealings, Washington avoided confrontation with the emirate and refrained from further strikes on Iran following Gulf leaders' requests.

However, Qatar's attempt to broker calm failed when Iran launched missile attacks on Ras Laffan in mid-March, causing extensive damage and long-term disruption to the facility. This escalated the regional conflict and directly involved Qatar in the tensions.
