US Must Confront Turkey’s Role as Safe Haven for Hamas and Iranian Operatives
Turkey has established itself as a global hub for Hamas commanders, Russian intelligence agents, Iranian operatives, and even NATO diplomats. The recent assassination attempt against former US President Donald Trump in Turkey was not an isolated failure of hotel security but indicative of a dangerous geopolitical model cultivated over years. Turkish intelligence has historically tolerated Iranian activities within its borders, allowing smuggling, surveillance, and sometimes kidnappings of Iranian opposition figures in exchange for border stability and security coordination in northern Iraq.
This tacit tolerance has enabled Iran to exploit freedom of movement in Turkey, gather intelligence, and smuggle advanced weaponry such as anti-tank missiles. Iran’s confidence to operate on Turkish soil stems from an understanding that Turkish authorities prefer to overlook or quietly manage incidents to preserve bilateral relations. The assassination attempt involved detailed tactical knowledge, including the exact floor where Trump was staying and the placement of weapons near his movement route, indicating a deeply entrenched operational infrastructure built over years of deliberate oversight.
For the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, escalating from monitoring Iranian refugees in Istanbul to attempting to shoot down the US presidential plane in Ankara was a matter of intent and raising operational goals. The US now faces a critical test: it cannot limit its response to investigating the hotel security breach but must demand a comprehensive purge of terrorist shadow networks operating in Turkey, from Iran to Hamas.
Given Turkey’s intelligence capabilities to conduct targeted operations in Syria and pursue political adversaries globally, it is capable of dismantling these resistance networks if directed by its leadership. The recent NATO summit in Ankara highlighted these tensions, underscoring the urgent need for Washington to reassess its approach to Turkey’s geopolitical role and security cooperation.
