Israeli Youth Footballer Joins Sporting Lisbon Academy Where Cristiano Ronaldo Trained

Eytan Yehonatan Baruch-El, a 12-year-old Israeli football talent, is training at Sporting Lisbon's prestigious academy, the same club where Cristiano Ronaldo developed. Baruch-El, who started playing football seriously after being identified as gifted in other areas, has already competed in European tournaments and trained alongside children of famous footballers. His journey began in Israel with youth teams like Beitar Ramat Gan and Maccabi Petah Tikva before moving to Maccabi Tel Aviv. In 2023, he attracted attention from Spanish clubs including Villarreal and Atletico Madrid but had to return to Israel due to the outbreak of war in October. Last year, Sporting Lisbon offered him a place, which he accepted, exposing him to advanced training, medical care, and a professional environment far beyond what he experienced in Israel.

Baruch-El plays mainly as a right winger using his left foot and is noted for his game vision, technique, and passing. Despite his small stature, medical assessments predict he will grow to about 1.80 meters. His training includes specialized physical development programs and detailed medical monitoring, such as custom insoles to correct minor imbalances. The academy environment is highly professional, with multiple coaches, physiotherapists, and staff supporting the players. Baruch-El has formed friendships with peers like Malik Dembélé, son of former Tottenham and Belgium international Mousa Dembélé, and plays alongside children of other football stars.

Living far from family and friends in Israel is challenging, but Baruch-El remains committed to his dream, inspired by Ronaldo's legacy at Sporting. He has a season ticket for Sporting's home games, including Champions League matches, and despite the sacrifices, he is eager to return to Portugal after brief visits home. His story reflects a growing trend in European football academies to scientifically nurture young talents from an early age, a level of professionalism often lacking in Israeli football. While the path to a professional career is difficult and uncertain, Sporting Lisbon's investment in Baruch-El at such a young age gives him a significant advantage in pursuing his ambitions.
