Independent Education Network Launches Program to Elevate Torah Learners Amid Draft Controversy

In response to the ongoing public debate over the conscription of yeshiva students and attempts to undermine their status, Rabbi Eliezer Sorotzkin, CEO of the Independent Education Network, announced a new educational initiative for the upcoming school year. The program, titled "Elevating Torah Learners," aims to counteract negative sentiments and strengthen appreciation for Torah study and its scholars within the network's schools.

Rabbi Sorotzkin communicated to school principals and teaching staff that this annual thematic focus is designed to deepen students' understanding of the importance of Torah learners, emphasizing that Torah and its students are fundamental to the existence of the Jewish people. A detailed and practical program will be distributed at the start of the school year, including educational content, social activities, and events to connect students with the world of Torah study.

This initiative comes amid a challenging period for the Independent Education Network, which recently faced threats of closure for nine of its Talmud Torah schools following a High Court petition by the Hadash organization. The petition cited irregularities in teaching hours and failure to meet civics and humanities curriculum requirements. After intensive negotiations led by Knesset member Moshe Gafni with the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister's Office, a postponement of at least one year was secured to prevent closures.

The network has also dealt with past financial scrutiny, including reports of irregularities in salary and pension payments, though it currently holds a valid management certification from the Registrar of Associations. Despite these difficulties, Rabbi Sorotzkin expressed optimism, wishing for a year of renewal, success, and meaningful educational activity.
