Report: At Least 12 Dead, 9 Wounded in Johannesburg Shooting
South African police are searching for more than 10 suspects who opened fire this morning, Wednesday, in a settlement east of Johannesburg, killing at least 12 people and wounding nine. The motive for the brutal attack is unknown.
According to a statement from local police, the suspects arrived in a white Toyota, entered the settlement from two different access points, and then fired at several locations before fleeing the scene in their vehicle. Detectives from the district, with the assistance of crime intelligence specialists and forensic experts, have been mobilized to investigate the incident and locate the suspects. The suspects have not yet been found and no arrests have been made as of this time.
Gauteng police commander Tommy Mthombeni arrived at the shooting scene and said: "You can classify these people, the shooters, as crazy, heartless, barbarians, because you could see the way they moved. When we tried to account for what actually happened, you could see that they came in here, started shooting and kept going."
Mthombeni also addressed the possibility that the shooting was connected to illegal mining in the settlement, saying: "At this stage, we cannot confirm that this incident occurred as a result of illegal mining."
