Oved Ba'Ir Restaurant Draws Large Lunch Crowds in North Tel Aviv with Fresh Skewers and Salads
Oved Ba'Ir, a new large-scale restaurant in north Tel Aviv near the National Sports Center and tennis complex in Hader Yosef, has quickly become a lunchtime hotspot just one week after opening. Operating only from 12:00 to 16:00 without formal PR or an online reservation system, the venue is already packed during early lunch hours. Currently, only one of the restaurant’s halls is open, seating around 280-300 diners, with plans to expand to accommodate about 500 once renovations are complete.
The restaurant offers a middle ground between a casual skewer joint and a more upscale Tel Aviv eatery, featuring efficient air conditioning and good acoustics despite the large crowds. The staff, mostly young and experienced from the original Oved restaurant, provide attentive service. The menu is straightforward, focusing on a variety of salads and grilled skewers including chicken thigh, kebab, entrecote, and even salmon skewers, alongside sides like hummus, falafel, and rice.
A salad platter priced at 36 shekels per person includes ten small dishes of fresh, well-seasoned vegetables such as beetroot, grilled eggplant, and roasted peppers. Main courses are served individually on parchment paper-lined trays, with skewers weighing about 120-130 grams each. The kebab was mildly spiced and juicy, while the chicken thigh skewer was slightly overcooked and under-seasoned. The entrecote was cooked to the requested medium and was of good quality. A tahini side, served complimentary, complemented the meat well.
For dessert, a 27-shekel dairy-free malabi was sweet but not essential after the meal. Overall, the food emphasizes freshness, quality ingredients, and generous portions rather than culinary innovation. Prices for a meal for two with basic skewers and salads run around 250-270 shekels, with more elaborate skewers costing more.
Given the strong demand and the restaurant’s appeal to a broad Israeli clientele, the hype is expected to grow, especially when evening hours begin. The location’s parking lot may face challenges with increased traffic, but the restaurant’s success appears well-deserved.
