Thousands Participate in Hebrew Law Sabbath to Highlight Jewish Legal Values in Israel

This coming Sabbath, coinciding with the Torah portion "Shoftim," hundreds of communities across Israel will hold lessons and lectures focusing on the role of Hebrew law in the Israeli legal system. The initiative, led by Israel Prize laureate Professor Nahum Rakover in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, aims to deepen public understanding of the values of justice, honesty, and mercy inherent in Hebrew law and their contribution to Israeli society and its judiciary.

Thousands are expected to take part in the "Hebrew Law Sabbath" events nationwide, where rabbis, judges, academics, and legal experts will discuss the unique character of Hebrew law and its integration of justice with compassion and social responsibility. Participants will also highlight examples of legislation enacted by the Knesset influenced by Hebrew legal principles and incorporated into Israel's legal framework.

The initiative is organized by the Heritage of Law in Israel Association and was founded by Prof. Rakover, a former deputy legal advisor to the government and a leading scholar of Hebrew law. The organizers emphasize that the Sabbath aims to raise public awareness about the importance of legal values in individual and societal life and to encourage study of Hebrew legal sources as a moral foundation for public and personal conduct.

Held annually near the "Shoftim" portion, which addresses the judicial system and governance institutions in Israel, the event underscores the contemporary relevance of Hebrew legal principles and their potential to enrich public discourse and the development of a judiciary inspired by Jewish heritage.
