Iran Overcomes US Air Defenses in Deadly Drone and Missile Attack on Jordanian Bases

In July, Iran launched a coordinated drone and missile attack on three American military bases in Jordan, resulting in the deaths of three US soldiers, injuries to over 100 others, and damage to several aircraft. This assault demonstrated Iran's advanced combat capabilities, which have evolved by adopting Russian tactics used in Ukraine. These tactics involve a combination of advanced maneuverable missiles and drones designed to overwhelm US air defenses and deplete interceptor missile stocks.

The New York Times reported that the July 17 attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base exposed the rapid depletion of US missile reserves. Sources familiar with inventory data revealed that the US had fired over 1,500 Patriot missiles and was left with fewer than 1,700 interceptors, while production rates for 2025 were projected at only 600 missiles. On a single day during that critical week, US forces launched approximately 50 Patriot missiles, each costing around $4 million.

Despite US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's April claim that Iran's missile program had been neutralized, Iran has rebuilt its underground missile facilities and resumed launches that nearly halted traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The escalating situation prompted then-US President Donald Trump to cancel planned airstrikes against Iran after warnings from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar that broad attacks could provoke Iranian retaliation against regional energy infrastructure. These Gulf leaders urged a diplomatic resolution to avoid further conflict.
