Olympiacos Presidents Taunt Panathinaikos After Greek Title Win
Olympiacos beat Panathinaikos 89-85 on Saturday night in Game 5 of the Greek playoff final to win the championship and complete a prestigious double, adding the domestic title to its European crown in what the club described as one of its greatest seasons ever. The matchup was played amid rising tension between the rivals.
The most explosive moment came during the game when Tyrique Jones and Kendrick Nunn clashed and were both ejected in the third quarter. Jones later settled the matter in the locker room by striking Nunn, an incident described as unprecedented in European basketball.
Olympiacos presidents Panagiotis and George Angelopoulos used the title celebration to attack Panathinaikos. They said, “Panathinaikos are busy talking, not basketball,” adding that the club talks about Olympiacos and the referees “365 days a year” and posts on social media, while Olympiacos prefers to “talk on the court first” and only speak to the media after becoming EuroLeague and Greek champions.
The Angelopoulos brothers also pushed back against comparisons with Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos, saying they cannot be placed in the same category. They noted that he has accumulated bans totaling dozens of months, while they have not been punished in recent years, and warned that if his behavior continues, it could harm the future of Greek basketball. They did not dwell on the Jones-Nunn incident, focusing instead on celebrating what they called one of the biggest seasons in club history, and definitely the best since 2012.
