Tiberias Municipality Demands Closure of Drug Distribution Center Amid Rising Crime Concerns

The Tiberias municipality is calling for the closure of a drug distribution center located in the heart of the city's tourist and business district, citing ongoing security and theft issues. Local merchants and residents have reported persistent problems with drug addicts and homeless individuals entering shops, attempting thefts, and creating an unsafe atmosphere. Business owners plan to protest on August 16 at Gan Ha'Ir park as part of a broader demonstration addressing the city's deteriorating commercial environment.

Merchants claim that despite multiple meetings with the mayor and promises of increased enforcement, the situation has not improved. Drori, a local business owner, emphasized the lack of effective policing, stating he witnesses no enforcement during his daily presence on the streets. Resident Shagit expressed fear walking in the city center, criticizing the placement of a drug substitution station in a key tourist area.

The municipality confirmed it has demanded the closure of the distribution center following a meeting with the operating association and a Tiberias police representative. In July, the city launched a large-scale enforcement campaign targeting drug users, street vendors, and public disturbances, issuing numerous fines. However, merchants report no lasting impact from these efforts.

The protest organizers stress their commitment to a peaceful demonstration aimed at revitalizing Tiberias into a clean, safe, and thriving city center. Meanwhile, talks between merchants and city officials continue in hopes of finding a resolution. The police reaffirm their ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime and maintain public safety in Tiberias.
