OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Ads to Five More Countries Including UK and Japan
OpenAI announced the expansion of its ChatGPT advertising program to five additional countries: the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. This move is part of a commercial trial that began earlier this year, with the company confirming the rollout is now complete in these markets. OpenAI plans to continue broadening the ad program to more regions throughout 2026, although Israel is not currently included and no specific timeline has been provided for its inclusion.
The ads appear separately from the AI-generated responses and are clearly marked as sponsored content. OpenAI emphasized that advertisers do not influence the answers provided by ChatGPT, and the advertising system is designed not to alter the content users receive. Additionally, the company has committed to not sharing users' conversation data with advertisers.
This advertising initiative primarily targets free and lower-cost ChatGPT users, while higher-tier paid subscribers, such as those on Plus or Pro plans, are exempt from seeing these ads. OpenAI has also launched a dedicated channel for businesses interested in advertising within ChatGPT, allowing them to register for updates and potentially join the program as it expands into new countries and categories. The ad distribution is being rolled out gradually, so not all users in supported countries see ads immediately.
