Yossi the Elephant Celebrates 52nd Birthday as World's Largest Zoo Elephant

Yossi, the first Israeli-born elephant, celebrated his 52nd birthday at the Ramat Gan Safari on Tuesday. Weighing approximately 7 tons and standing over 3.8 meters tall, Yossi holds the world record as the largest elephant in any zoo globally. His exceptional size results from a combination of excellent genetics and his advanced age, as male elephants continue growing throughout their lives.

Yossi's birthday coincides with International Elephant Day, highlighting a concerning trend in the wild: African elephants are shrinking in size. This is primarily due to illegal poaching, where hunters target the largest, oldest elephants with the most impressive tusks. The removal of these mature individuals before they can reproduce has led to populations dominated by younger, smaller elephants.

Living in a protected environment, Yossi exemplifies the full natural potential of African elephants. Over the years, he has fathered 32 offspring, including children and grandchildren, who now reside in various zoos worldwide and contribute to conservation efforts. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies African elephants as endangered, with an estimated illegal poaching rate of one elephant every 30 minutes in Africa for ivory trade.

To honor Yossi's milestone, the safari organized a private celebration. Born weighing just 70 kilograms and without tusks, Yossi has grown steadily to his current record-breaking size, symbolizing hope for the species' preservation amid ongoing threats in the wild.
