New Body Established to Protect Haredi Youth Threatened by Netanyahu's Draft Enforcement
Following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's threat to draft or imprison any Haredi who does not study Torah, the ultra-Orthodox community has created a dedicated unit to protect thousands of young people registered in yeshivas but not actively studying. This new body aims to provide legal and social support in case Netanyahu's enforcement measures are implemented. The initiative responds directly to the government's push to enforce the draft law on the Haredi population, which has been a contentious issue in Israeli politics. The unit will focus on defending the so-called "dropout youth" within the Haredi sector, who are at risk of conscription or incarceration under the current draft legislation. This development highlights the ongoing tension between the Israeli government and the Haredi community regarding military service obligations.
