US Marine F-18 Crashes During Training in Washington, Sparking Forest Fire
A U.S. Marine Corps F-18 Hornet crashed on Saturday afternoon in a mountainous area near Rimrock Lake in Yakima County, Washington, during a routine training flight. The pilot managed to eject before impact, suffered minor injuries, and was taken to hospital for treatment.
According to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, the crash triggered a forest fire in the wooded area nearby. Campsite visitors and campers in adjacent camping areas were evacuated as a precaution.
The Marine Corps said the aircraft belonged to Marine Aircraft Group 11, part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and described the incident as a non-fatal aviation accident. Fire crews, with help from helicopters and U.S. Forest Service personnel, worked to stop the blaze from spreading.
Authorities said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
