Haverford College President Apologizes to Jewish Students Following Antisemitism Lawsuit Settlement

Haverford College in Pennsylvania reached a settlement in a lawsuit filed by Jewish students and the group Jews at Haverford, who accused the college of failing to protect them from antisemitism and allowing discrimination against students supporting Israel. The lawsuit, initially filed in May 2024, alleged that Jewish students were ostracized and excluded from group discussions about the war, and that a professor called pro-Israel students "murderous racists." The college also reportedly permitted an event claiming Israel intentionally infected Palestinians with COVID-19.

Although the federal court dismissed the case in February 2025, the plaintiffs refiled it. Following congressional scrutiny of the college's handling of campus antisemitism, Haverford President Wendy Raymond publicly apologized, acknowledging the institution's failure to adequately support Jewish students committed to Israel as the Jewish homeland. She emphasized that Zionist students are welcome and entitled to equal access to academic programs and activities, and that harassment or exclusion based on Jewish identity or beliefs, including Zionism, violates college policy and may result in disciplinary action.

Attorney Lori Lowenthal Marcus, representing the plaintiffs, described the settlement as "fantastic," highlighting the importance of protecting students who support Zionism. Both parties agreed to the settlement to avoid further legal costs and uncertainty, without admitting liability. The college has pledged to improve its response to antisemitism going forward.
