Fitness Influencer Threatens Shaming Client, Backfires and Boosts His Business
A small fitness consultancy owner shared a recent experience involving a young influencer in her 20s, who requested a free fitness plan in exchange for social media exposure. The influencer, dubbed "Gigi" by the trainer, initially asked for a customized workout and nutrition program to lose weight before summer. When the time came to pay the standard $50 fee, she proposed paying with "exposure" instead. After consulting friends, the trainer insisted on payment, which she reluctantly provided.
A week later, the influencer weighed herself and found she had gained approximately 230 grams (half a pound) instead of losing weight. She angrily contacted the trainer early in the morning, declaring the program ineffective and threatening to damage his reputation by publicly demanding a full refund and a public admission on his business page that the program failed. She warned she would tag local gyms and brands he worked with if he did not comply by noon.
The trainer agreed to her demands without revealing the initial request for free service or the early morning confrontation. By midday, screenshots of her post circulated in local fitness groups, prompting questions and criticism directed at her. She later claimed he misrepresented her words, deleted her posts, and eventually stopped responding. Despite the controversy, her scheduled swimwear collaboration proceeded as planned, with no visible weight gain in photos.
Ironically, the trainer gained significant new client interest, with people attracted to his straightforward and moderate approach to weight loss. The influencer has not contacted him since. The incident highlights the risks influencers face when leveraging social media threats and how small businesses can sometimes benefit from such conflicts.
