Israel Finishes 10th at European Youth Handball Championship with Top Scorer Jonathan Pelech

Israel's youth handball team achieved a significant milestone by finishing 10th at the European Youth Handball Championship, concluding their impressive summer campaign on August 9, 2026. Despite a 39-29 loss to North Macedonia in their final match, the team earned considerable respect and secured a historic qualification for the upcoming Under-19 World Championship. Additionally, Israel's Under-21 team will compete in the World Championship next year.

Jonathan Pelech stood out individually by becoming the tournament's top scorer with 97 goals. Pelech needed five goals to clinch the top scorer title, which he achieved by the 14th minute of the final game, celebrating modestly. The match began well for Israel, with early leads and notable contributions from players Michalis and Gorbic. Although North Macedonia repeatedly closed the gap, Israel maintained a narrow halftime lead of 20-19.

In the second half, Israel struggled against North Macedonia's defense and eventually lost momentum. Despite efforts from players like Nevo Masika, who scored nine goals, Israel could not keep pace and fell behind. The final score did not overshadow the team's historic 10th-place finish and Pelech's scoring achievement. Other key contributors included Tomer Michalis, Rom Tobis, Geva Dagani, Ruben Ouanono, Itay Gorbic, Roy Genal, and Noam Levi. Goalkeepers Ruben Ouanono, Amit Maroz, and Itamar Mashraki made several crucial saves throughout the tournament.

This accomplishment marks a new high for Israeli youth handball and sets the stage for future international competitions.
