Inside Budapest's New Wonder Hotel, a Lifestyle Stay for Guests and Locals
Wonder, a new hotel that opened in February in central Budapest, is trying to be more than a place to sleep. Set at Király 36, on the edge of the Jewish Quarter in a preserved historic building, it combines rooms with an Italian restaurant, cocktail bar, spa and a cultural space meant to attract city residents as well as tourists. The hotel sits between the Jewish Quarter and Andrássy Avenue, within walking distance of major landmarks including the opera house, St. Stephen's Basilica, the parliament building, the Shoes on the Danube memorial and the bridges linking Pest and Buda.
The building's Jewish connection goes beyond location. One of its former residents was the Hungarian-Jewish fencer Attila Petschauer, an Olympic gold medalist in 1928 and 1932 and a world champion. During World War II, he was arrested, sent to a labor camp in Ukraine and killed by a Hungarian officer who had once been his Olympic teammate. His life later helped inspire the Hollywood film Sunshine.
The interiors were created through cooperation between architects, designers and artists from Tel Aviv, London and Budapest, with 19th-century works displayed alongside contemporary art collected personally by the owners. The hotel also uses its public spaces as attractions: its Popolare restaurant, led by chef Nicola, serves Italian dishes such as pasta, pizza, fish and salads, plus Israeli-leaning items like shakshuka and a bourekas dish, while the ground-floor cocktail bar follows a speakeasy style and hosts DJs from Thursday through Saturday.
Wonder also runs The Salon, a cultural venue for lectures, workshops, demonstrations and meetings, and a rooftop area used for stargazing events with views of central Budapest and the basilica dome. Its La Pausa wellness area includes a Finnish sauna, Turkish hammam, jacuzzi, cold plunge pool, treatment rooms, rest areas and an indoor bar. Guest rooms add free minibar items, coffee, tea, L'Occitane toiletries, smart TVs with Netflix and YouTube, touch-controlled lighting and air conditioning, plus automatic bedside lighting. Guests also get free access to a gym and a 2,000-square-meter swimming complex about 200 meters away. Room rates start at 835 shekels a night for a standard double, and breakfast costs 92 shekels per person.
