Gestational Diabetes Cases Surge 60% in England, Raising Long-Term Health Concerns
Gestational diabetes is becoming increasingly common, with experts warning it is not merely a temporary pregnancy condition but one that can affect both mother and child long-term. A recent large-scale study published in BMJ Medicine found that in England, one in eight mothers is now diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The diagnosis rate rose from about 8% of pregnancies in 2018 to over 12% in 2022, marking a 60% increase over five years. Researchers analyzed routine birth data from the UK National Health Service (NHS), covering more than 2.3 million mothers and 2.8 million births across 184 hospitals between 2018 and 2022.
The sharpest increases were observed among ethnic minority women and those living in deprived areas. For example, gestational diabetes affected approximately 23% of Asian women and 14% of women in the most deprived regions. The study also revealed significant disparities in pregnancy outcomes: Black mothers had higher rates of emergency cesarean sections, women in deprived areas were more likely to deliver prematurely, and Asian mothers had a higher likelihood of giving birth to smaller-than-expected babies. Gestational diabetes further increased the risk of premature birth in these groups.
Experts attribute the rise to factors such as increasing maternal age, higher obesity rates, and improved data collection. Changes in screening protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic did not significantly affect the upward trend, indicating broader underlying causes. Gestational diabetes typically develops after the 24th week of pregnancy when the body cannot produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar. Screening is recommended between weeks 24 and 28, involving glucose tolerance tests.
The condition poses risks including premature delivery, emergency cesarean sections, and abnormal birth weights, which can complicate labor. Long-term, mothers with gestational diabetes face up to a tenfold higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Children exposed to high maternal blood sugar may also have increased risks of obesity and diabetes later in life. Treatment primarily involves dietary management, glucose monitoring, and sometimes insulin or oral medications. Postpartum glucose testing is advised to detect any progression to type 2 diabetes. Researchers emphasize the importance of preventive measures and lifestyle changes to mitigate future health risks.
