Turkish Commander’s Shift in Syria May Ease Tensions Near Israeli Border
Omer Ciftci, a prominent Turkish commander in Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and former leader in the sensitive Daraa and Quneitra regions near the Golan Heights, has been reassigned north to Hama. This move, reported on August 8, 2026, is seen by Turkish analysts as potentially aimed at reducing tensions with Israel along the border. Ciftci, originally Turkish, is recognized for his leadership skills and influence over foreign fighters within HTS. After the fall of Assad’s regime, he commanded Division 44 in Daraa and Quneitra, areas critical from Israel’s perspective, and later led Division 70 in Damascus.
His current appointment to Division 62 in northern Syria is interpreted as part of Damascus’s efforts to dismantle remaining militia structures from the civil war era and integrate them into the formal military. The choice of a Turkish-origin officer like Ciftci may also signal to Ankara that the Syrian government’s move is not hostile toward Turkey. For Israel, the reassignment means a key Syrian commander once stationed near the Golan Heights is no longer positioned there, raising questions about whether this is a routine military decision or part of a broader political strategy.
