Fields Medalist Jacob Zimmerman Joins OpenAI to Focus on AI Safety Amid Existential Concerns
Jacob Zimmerman, a 38-year-old mathematician and the first Canadian to win the prestigious Fields Medal in 2026, recently announced he is joining OpenAI as a researcher to dedicate himself to artificial intelligence safety. Zimmerman, born in Kazan, Soviet Union, immigrated to Israel at age three and lived there for six years before moving to Canada. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto by age 18, earned a PhD from Princeton in 2011, and conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard.
Despite his skepticism about AI in the past, Zimmerman’s perspective shifted dramatically after experiencing ChatGPT in 2022. He realized AI systems could soon surpass humans in solving complex mathematical problems, raising profound social and existential questions. Last summer, he published an academic paper outlining dystopian scenarios where AI could potentially lead to human extinction, emphasizing the urgent need for rigorous safety research.
Zimmerman has shifted his research focus from pure mathematics to applying formal mathematical methods to AI safety, aiming to understand AI decision-making processes and mathematically prove that AI systems will not pose existential threats. He is taking a leave from his professorship at the University of Toronto to join OpenAI but intends to continue contributing to mathematics.
His deep ties to Israel include his early years living there, his mother’s work as a math teacher, and his doctoral advisor, Peter Sarnak, who holds dual Israeli-American citizenship. Zimmerman has also been politically active, signing a 2024 petition urging suspension of academic collaborations with Israeli institutions that do not condemn Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Zimmerman acknowledges the remarkable advances AI has made, including solving decades-old mathematical problems, but remains cautious. He uses AI tools to assist with tedious tasks and even to spot errors in his own work, yet he still prefers traditional mathematical research methods. His hope is that AI will ultimately serve humanity’s needs, allowing people to focus on what they love, including mathematics.
