IDF's Unique 'Erez' Program Prepares Future Chiefs of Staff Through Long-Term Officer Development

Retired Brigadier General Yuval Bazak detailed the IDF's unique 'Erez' program in a recent 103FM interview, emphasizing its role in mentoring officers throughout their entire careers. Bazak described the program as a lifelong commitment, working closely with military brigades to develop leaders who will serve at the forefront of combat units, particularly in the most challenging conditions.

The program aims to provide future commanders with deep professional education, treating military service as a discipline requiring thorough study akin to medicine. Participants receive advanced instruction in military history and security, fostering a broad perspective and humility by connecting them to a 3,000-year legacy.

The 'Erez' program became publicly known following the death of Second Lieutenant Itay Yaavetz, who was among the first cohort of about 70 cadets starting in September 2023, just a month before the outbreak of war in October. Major Colonel K., the program commander, explained that the initiative began shortly before the war and is now in its third cycle, with selection underway for the fourth. The program is designed to cultivate a high-quality generation of officers through an extensive and rigorous training process starting at a young age.
