Guatemala Transforms Into Popular Destination for Mature and Organized Travelers

Guatemala, long known primarily as a backpacker hotspot for young Israelis after their military service, is undergoing a significant transformation. The country is increasingly attracting couples, older travelers, and organized tour groups seeking a rich blend of wild nature, intriguing culture, historic sites, and upgraded tourism infrastructure. According to data from the travel company Ayala Geographic, demand for organized tours to Guatemala has surged sharply, with a 50% increase from 2023 to 2024 and over 100% growth from 2024 to 2025, a trend continuing into 2026.

Ilan Adler, an experienced tour guide with Ayala Geographic, explains that Guatemala is often combined with Costa Rica or Mexico in travel itineraries, offering visitors a mix of nature, culture, and relatively comfortable conditions. He highlights Guatemala’s appeal to travelers interested in authentic culture, dramatic landscapes, archaeological sites, colorful markets, and meaningful interactions with locals. Adler notes that the country now offers quality hotels, tasty cuisine, guided tours, and infrastructure suitable for older tourists, moving beyond its rough backpacker image.

The historic city of Antigua exemplifies this change, evolving into an international attraction with boutique hotels, cafes, and restaurants while preserving its colonial character. Despite these improvements, Guatemala retains its authentic, vibrant atmosphere without becoming overly commercialized. Adler also emphasizes Guatemala’s reputation as a safe and friendly destination for Israeli tourists, especially compared to rising global antisemitism. He advises travelers to exercise common sense and stay informed through the Israeli Foreign Ministry but notes that tourist areas generally feel secure.

Adler points out that first-time visitors are often surprised by the strong presence of Mayan culture in daily life, visible in markets, villages, traditional clothing, and languages. The country’s compact size belies its diverse offerings, including volcanoes, lakes, jungles, Mayan sites, and traditional markets all accessible within reasonable distances. The recommended travel season is the dry period from November to April, though travel during the rainy season (May to October) is possible with some afternoon showers.

He advises travelers not to rush their itinerary, recommending at least two weeks to explore Guatemala thoroughly and enjoy a relaxed pace. Key highlights include Antigua, Lake Atitlán and surrounding villages, Tikal, traditional Mayan markets, and, if possible, climbing one of the volcanoes.
