Guatemala Transforms Into Popular Destination for Mature Tourists and Couples

Guatemala, once primarily known as a backpacker stop for young Israelis after their military service, is undergoing a significant transformation in its tourism profile. The country is increasingly attracting couples, older travelers, and organized tour groups seeking a rich blend of wild nature, intriguing culture, historic sites, and improved tourism infrastructure. According to data from Ayala Geographic, demand for organized tours to Guatemala has surged sharply, with a 50% increase from 2023 to 2024 and over 100% growth from 2024 to 2025, a trend continuing into 2026.

Tour guide Ilan Adler from Ayala Geographic explains that Guatemala is often combined with Costa Rica or Mexico in tours, offering travelers a mix of nature, culture, and relatively comfortable conditions. Unlike its rough image, Guatemala now provides quality hotels, tasty food, guided tours, and infrastructure suitable for older tourists. The historic city of Antigua exemplifies this shift, evolving into an international attraction with boutique hotels and cafes while maintaining its colonial charm.

Adler emphasizes that Guatemala remains authentic and vibrant, not overly commercialized, and is considered a safe destination for Israeli tourists amid rising global antisemitism. Israeli visitors reportedly experience no significant issues related to their identity in tourist areas, though caution is advised in Guatemala City at night. The strong presence of Mayan culture in daily life surprises many first-time visitors, who find a diverse landscape of volcanoes, lakes, jungles, and traditional markets within accessible distances.

The recommended travel season is the dry period from November to April, though travel during the rainy season (May to October) is possible with some afternoon showers. Adler advises travelers not to rush their itinerary, suggesting at least two weeks to fully enjoy Guatemala’s highlights such as Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Mayan villages, Tikal, and volcano hikes if possible.
