UK Forces Seize Russian Oil Tanker in Six-Hour Channel Operation
British security forces intercepted a Russian oil tanker in the English Channel on Sunday morning, in what Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as a blow to Russia and to those fueling Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. The vessel was identified as the "Smirosus," and officials said it belonged to Russia’s shadow fleet.
The operation lasted six hours and involved Royal Marines, specially trained law enforcement officers from the National Crime Agency, and air support from the Royal Air Force. According to the article, the takeover took place at sea in the Channel and was carried out as a coordinated, high-complexity mission.
The UK Ministry of Defence said the tanker will be held and monitored off the south coast of England while further investigations continue. The ship is expected to remain in detention pending additional inquiry.
Starmer said the successful action "strikes another blow against Russia" and sends a message to those supporting Putin’s war that Britain will not let them hide.
