IDF Disbands Haredi Combat Platoon, Integrates Soldiers into Secular Unit Amid Tensions

Haredi soldiers who enlisted in the "Tomer" platoon of the IDF's Givati Brigade report that the platoon has been disbanded. These soldiers, who joined in November 2024 with the expectation of maintaining their religious lifestyle, were transferred to a secular combat platoon currently operating in the Gaza Strip. The disbandment was decided by the Haredi management, which announced it would stop recruiting Haredi fighters for the platoon, leading to its gradual closure.

The soldiers expressed deep disappointment and feelings of betrayal, highlighting the heavy personal price they paid by breaking with their communities to serve in the IDF under conditions that respected their religious observance. Many severed ties with family and risked future social consequences, including difficulties in marriage prospects. They lament that the promises made to accommodate their lifestyle have not been upheld, with reports of mixed-gender duty shifts, music played during religious mourning periods, and lack of respect for Sabbath observance in their new unit.

Some soldiers are considering leaving the unit due to these conditions, while others remain silent out of fear following recent protests by Givati soldiers. Attempts to address the issue with the Haredi management and brigade rabbinate have so far been unsuccessful. Commanders claim conditions remain unchanged, but soldiers report otherwise, citing operational realities that conflict with their religious needs.

The soldiers emphasize their commitment to serve and demand recognition and respect for their rights, threatening to escalate their protest if ignored. The IDF spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.
