After legal proceedings, the head of the Kiryat Shmona Religious Council is returning to his post
Following a High Court of Justice ruling and with the agreement of the parties, Rabbi Yitzhak Kekun, chairman of the religious council in Kiryat Shmona, will return to his position.
A political and public סערה erupted in Kiryat Shmona after the director general of the Ministry of Religious Services, Yehuda Avidan, announced the dissolution of the local religious council and the removal of its chairman, Rabbi Yitzhak Kekun, who had served in the post for more than two decades. The Kiryat Shmona municipality criticized the move and warned that it would take legal action. The city sent a warning letter demanding the cancellation of the appointment of Rabbi Shimon Malka as commissioner over the religious council. According to the municipality, the Ministry of Religious Services ignored an agreed list of candidates and acted in a way intended to allow the council to be dissolved after the legal deadline for appointing it had passed.
