Israeli Civil Rights Group Files Supreme Court Petition Against Education Ministry's 'Incitement Committee'

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) has filed a petition with the Supreme Court against the Ministry of Education and Education Minister Yoav Kisch, demanding the immediate cessation of the so-called "Incitement Committee." This advisory committee to the ministry's director general has been operating since 2016 to address incitement against the state within the education system.

The petition, submitted on behalf of Jewish and Arab educators, accuses the committee of operating covertly to silence and intimidate teachers. It alleges severe violations of fundamental rights including freedom of expression, privacy, freedom of occupation, and the right to due process. According to the petition, the committee secretly monitors teachers' social media activity and compiles intelligence files without transparency or fair opportunity for teachers to respond.

The petition further claims that the committee's existence creates a chilling effect, deterring educators from engaging in controversial topics. It argues that the committee's actions are disproportionate, as even baseless complaints can escalate to security involvement and official documentation within the ministry's systems. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel calls for the committee's activities to be halted immediately to protect educators' rights and freedoms.
