Russia Develops Electronic Warfare System to Disrupt Elon Musk's Starlink Satellites

Russia recently unveiled an electronic warfare system named Volna Kupol Garant, designed to interfere with the satellite communications of Elon Musk's Starlink network, according to the technology magazine Techradar. The system targets Starlink satellites in orbit by emitting focused radio signals that disrupt eight transmission bands, temporarily cutting off communication without physically damaging the satellites.

Starlink provides satellite internet services, especially in disaster and war zones where conventional internet is unavailable. Elon Musk donated hundreds of Starlink terminals to Ukraine at the start of the Russia-Ukraine war to maintain internet connectivity. Starlink services are also marketed in Israel, including plans by El Al to use them for in-flight WiFi.

The Russian system uses a narrow-beam, high-frequency radio signal distinct from conventional electronic warfare methods. It overloads the satellites' receiving antennas, preventing them from detecting signals from ground terminals. Volna Kupol Garant consists of six trailer-mounted units, each with two steerable satellite antennas, allowing flexible deployment from mobile or fixed ground stations. One system can disrupt Starlink coverage over an area up to 20 square kilometers.

However, the system's large size increases its vulnerability to enemy detection. Analysts suggest this development could significantly impact the United States, which relies on Starlink's satellite reception capabilities in regional conflicts.
