5.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Suez Area, Felt Strongly in Southern Israel

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Suez region in Egypt overnight between Sunday and Monday, August 3, 2026, and was strongly felt in southern Israel and around the Dead Sea area. Many residents in southern Israel described waking up in alarm as their homes shook. One resident from Kiryat Gat said her entire bed moved, causing her to scream, while another from Ashdod recounted waking up in hysteria, initially thinking she was hallucinating. Social media users expressed fear, with one writing, "God's fear, everything moved," and another describing the quake at 3 a.m. as the scariest experience.

The German Research Center for Geosciences reported the earthquake's depth at 10 kilometers. The Egyptian Red Crescent confirmed they had not received any reports of injuries or damage. Video footage from surveillance cameras in Egypt showed buildings shaking during the quake. The event caused widespread alarm but no reported physical harm in the affected regions.
