Meir Medical Center Launches Online Workshop to Support Parents of Children with Food Allergies
The Meir Medical Center in Israel has introduced a pioneering online workshop aimed at parents of children with food allergies. This initiative seeks to provide parents with practical tools to manage the constant vigilance, anxiety, and emotional fatigue that accompany raising a child with potentially life-threatening food allergies. The workshop, led by a medical psychologist, addresses the psychological and emotional challenges faced by families, recognizing that the impact of food allergies extends beyond the child to affect the entire family unit.
Parents participating in the sessions learn strategies to cope with uncertainty, ongoing worry, and emotional overload. The program includes training in emotional regulation, mindfulness, family communication, and stress management. Dan Aloni, a medical psychologist at Meir Medical Center, emphasized that the workshop is designed not to diminish the seriousness of the medical risks but to help parents develop confidence and balanced coping mechanisms so that fear does not dominate family life.
The workshop also tackles common concerns such as fostering a child's independence without increasing risk, interacting with educational and social settings, and maintaining family balance despite the pervasive anxiety. Food allergies are increasingly common among children in Israel and worldwide, often requiring strict avoidance of allergens and carrying emergency epinephrine injectors due to the risk of anaphylaxis. Meir Medical Center highlights the importance of supporting parents' mental resilience alongside medical treatment to improve overall family well-being.
