Israel is launching a new mandatory financial education curriculum for all ninth-grade students starting in the upcoming school year, with plans to extend it to tenth graders the following year. The curriculum was developed by the Pedagogical Secretariat in collaboration with academics, economists, and teachers, led by Professor Yaniv Reingewertz from the University of Haifa. The program aims to equip young people with practical financial skills to navigate the complex economic realities they face.

Education Minister Yoav Kish emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating it provides Israeli youth with essential financial tools for life. Students like Or Masicha from the multidisciplinary Amal School in Hadera highlighted the value of learning money management early, comparing it to fundamental life skills such as cooking or driving. Committee members noted significant gaps in financial knowledge among youth, which could hinder their ability to make informed economic decisions.

So far, 550 teachers have been trained to teach the course, with an additional 2,050 scheduled for training between September and October. The curriculum covers four main areas: smart consumerism and financial decision-making, money and banking, the evolving labor market, and investments. Ninth graders will learn basic financial concepts like interest and savings, while tenth graders will explore investment options including the stock market, real estate, human capital, and foreign exchange, alongside risk management and diversification principles.

Student Liron Zwartz also from the Amalgamated School in Hadera described the course as vital for real life, stressing that financial success depends more on managing money wisely than on income alone. She noted that many high school graduates lack sufficient understanding of money management beyond spending. The program reflects a national effort to prepare the next generation for financial independence and responsibility.
