Ex-Maccabi Tel Aviv Player Norris Cole Blames Agent Rich Paul for $70 Million NBA Loss

Norris Cole, former Miami Heat player and ex-teammate of LeBron James, accused top agent Rich Paul of mishandling his contract negotiations, which he claims cost him tens of millions of dollars and effectively ended his NBA career. Cole, who played for Miami from 2011 to 2015 and won two championships, revealed in a podcast that he fully trusted Paul to manage his contract talks but later discovered serious mismanagement that weakened his bargaining power. "I learned a hard lesson in the business of basketball," Cole said, urging young players to stay involved in their negotiations and not leave everything to their agents.

Cole expected a significant raise after his rookie contract but ended up signing a minimum deal. He then played briefly in China, where he was injured, underwent rehabilitation, and later received another NBA chance with the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, he struggled to regain his status, partly due to damage to his reputation linked to his former agent. Eventually, Cole left the NBA and joined Maccabi Tel Aviv for the 2017/18 season.

Despite the setbacks, Cole emphasized that he managed to recover and continue playing professionally, currently competing for Peñarol in Uruguay at age 37. He estimated his financial losses due to the agent's poor management at around $70 to $80 million. Cole also noted that firing a powerful agent like Paul led to attempts to portray him as greedy, complicating his career revival.
