US Central Command Warns Mobile Phone Videos Aid Iran in Middle East Operations

Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), has issued a warning to American forces in the Middle East about the operational risks posed by sharing videos and photos via mobile phones. According to Reuters, some US personnel stationed in the region may be required to surrender their phones, which they use for communication with family, to prevent sensitive information leaks. Cooper highlighted that Iran exploits real-time social media content to assess the impact of its attacks, potentially endangering US service members and civilians in Gulf countries.

In a letter to troops, Cooper emphasized the critical need to enhance information security, noting that images and videos of soldiers online could help adversaries evaluate strike damage. He referenced a recent video showing US soldiers seeking cover during an Iranian missile and drone attack in Jordan, which provided Iran with valuable intelligence on the strike's effectiveness. Cooper explained that while Iran knows weapons were launched, they lack clarity on whether they missed or hit their targets, information gleaned from such footage.

CENTCOM described the letter as a routine reminder about operational priorities and information security. In Jordan, a target of Iranian attacks, some US forces have been notified that their phones might be confiscated soon, though this measure is still under consideration due to security concerns.
