Azerbaijan Captain Reportedly Turns Down Maccabi Netanya Over Israel Move
Sabuhy Abdulzade, the captain of Sumgayit and a midfielder for Azerbaijan, reportedly rejected an offer from Maccabi Netanya for political, not professional, reasons. Local media said the 24-year-old was initially interested in the deal because the financial terms were attractive.
According to the report, Abdulzade changed his mind after learning that Maccabi Netanya is an Israeli club. He then refused to join because the team plays in Israel, and he is believed to be unwilling to play in a country at war.
Abdulzade has made eight appearances for Azerbaijan’s national team and has scored three goals this season. He can play across central midfield positions, from defensive midfielder to attacking midfielder. The report did not say whether Maccabi Netanya plans to pursue another target.
