Elon Musk Becomes the World’s First Trillionaire After SpaceX Trading Debut
Elon Musk became the first person in history to be worth $1 trillion when SpaceX began trading today, Friday, in a historic market debut. SpaceX shares opened on Nasdaq with a jump of about 15% to $150 apiece, lifting Musk’s stake in the company to more than $766 billion.
When that SpaceX value is combined with his holding in Tesla, worth about $280 billion, Musk’s total net worth from the two companies reaches roughly $1.05 trillion. The SpaceX offering alone added more than $180 billion to his fortune, and CNBC said his personal wealth now exceeds the national GDP of Taiwan, Ireland, or Sweden.
Musk is now worth more than the five richest people in the world combined. The milestone is expected to intensify debate over economic inequality and the rise of wealthy U.S. tech founders. The listing also created thousands of new millionaires among SpaceX employees and executives, with some becoming billionaires.
After the formal debut, SpaceX shares climbed further, rising about 22% to roughly $164 a share, implying a company valuation of about $2.2 trillion. Tesla shares fell about 2% on Friday to around $390.
